Project Description

The Podolsky Metro Bridge is a combined road and rail bridge being built over the Dnieper River in Kiev. The arch bridge will cross the harbour, carrying six lanes of traffic on the upper deck and a metro line on the lower deck.

The overall construction project has a length of 7 km and its opening is planned for 2016. VSL Heavy Lifting was responsible for lifting and sliding the two main arch segments. Both 650t segments had a length of 80m. For the lifting and sliding operation, the main contractor installed four temporary towers, two on each side of the bridge.

For each lift operation, an arch segment was placed on pontoons, towed into position and placed on corbels. From there the segments were lifting 58m. Once on top of the temporary towers, the segments had to be slid by 11m.
